The Pirates (9-8, 1-2 Conference USA) outscored the Blazers (12-, 2-1) 12-3 in the first 3:41 of the second half to turn a three-point halftime lead into a 12-point advantage, 39-27, making five of its first seven shots out of the locker room.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Jamar Abrams and Erin Straughn capped the run as ECU scored six unanswered points. UAB then proceeded to go on a 22-10 run over the next 9:11 to tie the score at 49-all, with Sanders scoring 10.
ECU guard Brock Young untied the game with a 3 to give the Pirates a 52-49 lead with 6:46 to play. UAB then scored 11 straight points to take an eight-point lead. Sanders' lay-up with 2:30 to play capped the outburst and gave the Blazers their biggest lead of the night at 60-52.
Following a 3-pointer from Jontae Sherrod and a jumper by Abrams, the Pirates were down only three with 45 seconds remaining. However, Aaron Johnson made 4-of-4 free throws in the final 38 seconds to end the Pirates' hopes of a comeback.
Sherrod and Abrams scored 16 points each. Young also finished in double figures with 10 points.
Both teams shot the ball at a much higher percentage in the second half. UAB converted on 54.5 percent (12-22) of its field goal attempts after halftime, while ECU connected on 50 percent (11-22) of its second half shots.
The first half was back-and-forth affair with five ties and five lead changes with neither side leading by more than five points. The final lead change of the half came just before the buzzer sounded with Abrams draining a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give ECU a three-point lead, 27-24, at intermission.
The Blazers dominated the glass in the second half, grabbing 17 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, compared to eight total rebounds by the Pirates. UAB scored 10 second chance points after halftime and limited ECU to five second half offensive rebounds.
Johnson, the NCAA assists leader, finished with just three assists and 10 points. Cameron Moore also reached double figures with 16 points.
The Pirates return to action Wednesday, Jan. 19 at UCF. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the UCF Arena in Orlando.
