Player of the Game
Junior Darrius Morrow was the Pirates' top scorer for a second straight game and the third time in six conference games this season. Morrow finished with a game-high 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. He shot 79 percent at the free throw line converting 10-of-13 opportunities after missing 10 foul shots Saturday at Marshall. He also posted season-highs in blocks and steals with two in each category. Over the last three games, Morrow is averaging 21.7 points over the last three games.
Play of the Game
East Carolina was leading by four with under three minutes left in the first half until Southern Miss forward Gary Flowers' 3-pointer narrowed that margin. On the ensuing possession, Jamar Abrams came off a screen from Brock Young and then set a pick for Jontae Sherrod, who passed the ball to Young at the top of the key. Young then tossed a perfect lob pass to an airborne Abrams who slammed the ball home to push the lead back to three.
Turning Point of the Game
With 10:05 to play and the the Pirates holding a three-point lead, 53-50, USM guard Angelo Johnson made back-to-back 3-pointers to turn a three-point deficit into a three-point advantage in less than 40 seconds shifting the momentum to the visitors from Hattiesburg, Miss.
Stat of the Game
Even though both teams shot the ball extremely well from the floor and the free throw line, it was Southern Miss who had the advantage on the glass. The Golden Eagles out-rebounded the Pirates by eight, but most importantly they limited ECU to just three offensive rebounds, while grabbing seven off their own. Southern Miss scored 11 second chance points, while East Carolina scored just two.
