GREENVILLE, N.C. - After a 3-0 loss to UCF Friday, East Carolina looks to record its first Conference USA victory of the season as the Pirates host UTEP at Minges Coliseum. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
ECU brings a 2-11 record into the contest as well as a 0-4 league ledger. Meanwhile the Miners, with a 3-1 triumph over Marshall Friday in Huntington, are 12-5 overall and an even 2-2 in C-USA action.
Against the Knights, Senior Amanda Lutzow returned from a four-game absence to rack up a match-high 18 digs, a performance complemented by 14 out of sophomore Shelby Beasley. Offensively, sophomore Whitney Campbell and Lutzow put down six kills each while freshman Zarah Cecich dished out 21 assists. In the blocking column, redshirt junior Kelly Derby collected a team-best four (all assists).
The Knights were buoyed by a 43-kill performance, committing just 14 errors on 119 attempts to hit .244 as compared to a .042 mark by ECU. UCF also held the upper hand in service aces (6-1), digs (63-53) and total blocks (9.0-7.0). The Pirates' defensive performance resulted in a 17.67 dig per set average for the contest, well over their season average of 12.80.
As for UTEP, Horton played a large part in the Miners' assault versus the Thundering Herd, as she produced five blocks (2s/3a). Xitlali Herrera also chipped in a stellar performance, posting a double-double with 12 kills, 17 digs and adding five blocks, while Bridget Logan tallied 11 kills.
Malia Patterson dished out 46 assists and also contributed 12 digs and two blocks while leading the Miners defense was Stephanie Figueroa with 18 digs.
UP NEXT FOR THE PIRATES: East Carolina welcomes Houston to Greenville for a pair of league matches next weekend. The Pirates and Cougars will play Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. before completing the weekend Sunday with a contest at 1 p.m.
