NORFOLK, Va. - Dimitri Batten scored 18 points and Chris Cooper had his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Old Dominion past East Carolina 63-58 on Tuesday night.
Reserve Shamarr Bowden paced East Carolina with 14 points, while Darrius Morrow added 11 and Miguel Paul contributed 10 points.
Both teams struggled shooting the basketball in the first half as the Monarchs held a slim two-point lead at intermission, 25-23. ECU connected on just 8-of-28 (.286) in the opening stanza, but were 5-of-14 (.357) from outside the arc. ODU made just 37 percent (10-of-27) of its first half shots from the floor and helped keep the Pirates in the game by missing five of nine foul shots.
With his team down two, Morrow gathered an offensive rebound and stuck the ball back in the basket to ignite a 14-5 run to propel the Pirates (4-2) out a seven-point advantage, 42-35, with 12:50 to play.
The Monarchs (4-3) responded with a 15-2 run to take a six-point lead, 50-44, with 7:51 to play as the Pirates went 1-of-4 from the floor, committed two turnovers and were 0-for-2 at the foul line during that five-minute stretch.
However, ECU continued to chip away, and got within two points on three occasions, the last time at 59-57 with 48 seconds left.
Following a 3 from Paris Roberts-Campbell to bring ECU within two with 3:51 remaining, Maurice Kemp had an opportunity to put the Pirates ahead with a 3 from the right wing with 2:57 to play, but it went down and rimmed back out and the Monarchs scored the next four points to take a 59-53 lead with 1:43 to play.
After two Old Dominion timeouts, Marquel De Lancey hit a layup and Batten capped the scoring with two foul shots with 9 seconds to go.
The Monarchs, who won their fourth straight in the series, outshot East Carolina 42.3 percent (22-of-52) to 33.3 percent (19-of-57).
The Pirates finished night 8-of-27 from behind the arc (.296) and just 12-of-22 at the free throw line (.545). The Monarchs posted similar numbers, connecting on a mere 22.2 percent of their 3-point attempts (4-of-18) and just 51.7 percent of their foul shots (15-of-29).
East Carolina returns home to face Charlotte on Saturday, Dec. 3. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
