GREENVILLE, N.C. - The 2012 meeting between East Carolina and South Carolina, which was tentatively designated as an early November matchup, will be played Saturday, Sept. 8 in Columbia according to a release of league schedules by the Southeastern Conference Wednesday.
The Pirates and Gamecocks, who are currently engaged in a five-game series which began at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium last September, will square off against each other at Williams-Brice Stadium for the first time since 1999.
As a result of the cooperative effort with the SEC, East Carolina's contest against Appalachian State at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium has been moved up one week to serve as the Pirates' official season opener Sept. 1. ECU added the Mountaineers to the 2012 slate as its fourth non-conference opponent earlier this month.
In addition to games against South Carolina and Appalachian State, East Carolina will also face Atlantic Coast Conference member North Carolina at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill and host Navy. Those contests are currently scheduled for Sept. 22 and Oct. 27, respectively.
The Pirates' annual Conference USA schedule, which will feature home games against Houston, Marshall, Memphis and UTEP in 2012, is traditionally released by the league office in late winter or early spring.
