TULSA, Okla. - Justin Hurtt scored 21 points, Scottie Haralson had 18 and Jordan Clarkson came off the bench to add 17 as Tulsa defeated East Carolina 86-67 on Wednesday night.
The win ended a string of five games decided either in overtime or the final seconds for the Golden Hurricane (14-11, 7-4 Conference USA).
The Pirates (13-12, 5-6) hung close for 30 minutes thanks to seven 3-pointers by six different players.
Leading scorer Jontae Sherrod (15.3 points per game) was held to 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting for East Carolina while Darrius Morrow added 10 points.
Pirate senior Jamar Abrams became the 25th player in school history to score 1,000 points dropping in seven points tonight to hit the mark. Abrams also became the school's all-time leader in games played (115).
Tulsa led wire-to-wire, scoring the game's first seven points. ECU fought back to cut the lead to one on three occasions, but never moved ahead of the Hurricane, who won their seventh straight over the Pirates.
After Hurtt scored nine straight points, consecutive baskets by Clarkson pushed Tulsa out to a 12-point lead with 1:21 left in the first half. ECU scored the final five points of the half capped by Corvonn Gaines' 3 from the corner just before the halftime buzzer to cut ECU's deficit to only seven,36-29.
The ever-resilient Pirates stayed within eight points through the first nine minutes of the second half before Tulsa went on a 16-8 run to take a 16-point lead, 71-55, with 6:55 to play.
Haralson made three consecutive 3-pointers to extend the lead to 27 with 3:48 to play. Tulsa led by as many as 29.
Tulsa shot 52.5 percent from the field after struggling below 40 percent in its three previous games.
East Carolina also shot over 40 percent for the first time in three games and finished at 44.2 percent from the floor.
