OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - East Carolina senior All-America Seth Maness is one of 30 NCAA baseball student-athlete candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award the organization announced Thursday. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Maness is joined by Marshall's Arik Sikula as the only student-athlete's from Conference USA.
An accounting major who is scheduled to graduate in May, Maness is a three-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll recipient, three-time Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient (2008-10) and was named to the 2010 C-USA All-Academic Team.
On the field, Maness is a four-year starter that owns a 29-8 career record with 261 strikeouts and a 4.10 ERA. In the season opener against Youngstown State (Feb. 18), he surrendered one run in seven innings with seven strikeouts to set the tone for a weekend series sweep.
The Pinehurst, N.C. native, who has not allowed a run in 257.2 of his 313.2 career innings, owns an 18-3 career mark against C-USA teams and his 29 career wins, ranks fourth all-time in C-USA history and tied for third in the ECU career record book. During his career with the Pirates Maness has fanned 261 batters while walking just 54, a 4.8-to-1 ratio.
A year ago Maness, the 2010 Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Year, logged a league-high 101.1 innings over 17 appearances (15 starts) and posted a conference second-best 10 wins. He registered 90 strikeouts and walked just 16 batters all season, both ranking among the league leaders. The right-hander tossed one complete game and added a save in one of two relief appearances.
A three-time first-team All-C-USA performer, Maness earned all-tournament honors after posting his 10th win of the season during the 2010 C-USA Championship against Southern Miss, where he carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a leadoff double to Tyler Koelling. Maness shook off the bump in the road to remain effective throughout his time toeing the rubber, giving up just one unearned run on five hits in 7.2 innings.
Entering the 2011 season, Maness garnered preseason all-america designations by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) second-team, Collegiate Baseball (Louisville Slugger) third-team and College Baseball Lineup (formerly Ping!Baseball) third-team accolades, while also taking home preseason first-team All C-USA honors from the league's nine head coaches.
