Player of the Game
Jontae Sherrod posted his sixth 20-point game of the season, scoring 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 at the free throw line. Sherrod sank 4-of-8 3-pointers, including 3-of-6 in the second half. Sherrod scored 15 points during the Pirates' 22-5 run at the start of the second half. He also handed out four assists and came up with a season-high three steals.
Play of the Game
Jamar Abrams slammed down a Corvonn Gaines miss early in the first half, helping him out of a shooting clump. The dunk sparked a 4-of-9 shooting performance by the Richmond, Va. Senior after he went 0-for-7 against SMU on Wednesday.
Turning Point of the Game
Corvonn Gaines' 3-pointer with 12:23 left in the game gave East Carolina a five-point lead. Jontae Sherrod had made a 3 just over a minute earlier to break a 43-43 tie, but UCF scored on its following possession to keep it a two-point game. Gaines' basket was the first of 10 unanswered points scored by the Pirates.
Stat of the Game
East Carolina scored 18 points of 18 UCF turnovers. The Pirates especially took advantage of the Knight's mistakes in the second half, scoring 14 points off 12 UCF miscues after halftime. UCF scored seven points off 10 ECU turnovers.
Additional Game Notes
• East Carolina swept the two-game season series from UCF for the first time. The Pirates have won four of the last six games against the Knights.
• The Pirates equaled their previous-best Conference USA win total of five. ECU has never won more than five games during any C-USA season.
• ECU improved to 9-3 at home this season and 5-0 inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Saturdays.
