GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jacksonville's Aryon Hardy made a 3-pointer near the end of regulation to tie the game and the Dolphins carried that momentum into overtime to defeat East Carolina, 71-66, in the opening round of the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Tuesday.
Senior Jontae Sherrod led the Pirates (18-16) with 26 points in his final game, while junior Darrius Morrow posted his fourth-straight double-double with 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
The Pirates jumped out to an early 5-1 lead as the Dolphins (19-11) missed their first five shots, but once they made the first baskets came easier. Hardy put Jacksonville ahead for the remainder of the half with a layup at the 9:22 mark for a 12-10 advantage. JU extended its lead to eight, 25-17, with 2:20 remaining. The Pirates ended the period on a 9-2 run capped by a 3-pointer from Erin Straughn just before the halftime buzzer to bring the Pirates to within one, 27-26, at the break.
Jacksonville quickly pushed its lead back out to eight in the first four minutes of the second half, before ECU went on a 9-0 run to take a 39-38 lead with 14:19 to play. The Dolphins countered with a 10-3 run of their own to regain a six-point lead, 48-42, with 10:12 to play on 3-pointer from Keith McDougald.
Yet again, the Pirates showed the resiliency they displayed all season and scored eight unanswered to go up by two, 50-48, with 6:30 remaining only to have the Dolphins steal the lead away on another 3 by McDougald with 4:45 to play.
Sherrod gave East Carolina the lead back twice in the final three minutes with a pair of 3-pointers. The first put the Pirates ahead by two, 55-53, with 2:56 remaining and the second untied the game and gave ECU a 58-55 lead with 28 seconds left on the clock.
Hardy then picked up an errant pass and drilled the game-tying 3-pointer with 16 ticks left to force the overtime period.
In the extra session, JU scored the first two points and never trailed. The Dolphins scored four points off turnovers and three on offensive rebounds in overtime. With the game tied a 60, the Dolphins went on a 7-2 run for a 67-62 lead with 2:32 to play and never allowed the Pirates to get closer than three points the remainder of the contest.
Four players scored in double figures for the Dolphins, led by Travis Cohn's 18 points. Hardy added 12 and McDougald and Tevin Gavin scored 11 apiece.
The loss ends the season for the Pirates, which posted the second-most wins during the school's Division I history and earned its first postseason appearance in 18 years.
