MONTREUX, Switzerland - East Carolina volleyball head coach Pati Rolf has been assigned to officiate at the 2011 Montreux Volley Masters, a competition scheduled for June 7-12 at the Omnisports du Pierrier in Montreux, Switzerland.
An international women's indoor volleyball gathering which began in 1984, the Montreux Volley Masters brings together the best national women's teams from around the world. The tournament is one of the major world volleyball events, allowing championship teams and Olympic medal winning squads from around the globe to meet and compete and prepare for the official International Volleyball Federation (IFVB) competitions, notably the World Grand Prix, the World Championships and Olympic Games.
"It is an honor to officiate in such a prestigious event," Rolf stated. "To be a part of something that allows women the opportunity to compete at the highest level is something in which I have always wanted to be involved. It is also a tremendous honor to represent women in the IFVB and bring exposure to all women worldwide. I appreciate the opportunity and look forward to this event."
Pool A includes China, Germany Peru and the United State while Pool B consists of Cuba, Italy, Japan and Netherlands. Teams will play each of their pool opponents before contesting qualification matches which will determine the participants in the semifinals. The United States returned to the tournament last season after a five-year hiatus, falling to China in the gold medal match.
Rolf first gained international officiating exposure at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta as a line judge. Since then, she has worked World Cups, the Pan American Cup, the Boris Yeltsin Cup - where she met Yeltsin, and was a reserve for the World League.
When she obtained her FIVB International Officiating Certificate in 2003, Rolf was just one of 15 female international officials in the world. The Professional Association of Volleyball Officials Hall of Fame member has been a registered national volleyball official since 1990.
Rolf enters her third season with ECU in 2011 and welcomes back all but two players from last year's roster. The Pirates will report for preseason training in early August before hosting the East Carolina Classic to begin the new campaign.
