Meet the Pirates
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior outside receiver Lance Lewis caught a pair of touchdown passes and junior running back Reggie Bullock scored from 50 yards away on a fourth-and-one carry during East Carolina's second, and final, scrimmage of preseason camp Saturday morning at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
The Pirate offense put on a big-play show early with Bullock's touchdown, a 49-yard TD pass from sophomore Rio Johnson to Lewis and a 38-yard run by sophomore Michael Dobson all within the first 20 plays of the exhibition. ECU passers Johnson, senior Dominique Davis, junior Brad Wornick and redshirt freshman Shane Carden combined to go 34-of-45 for 340 yards. On the other side of the ball, junior outside linebacker Chris Baker recorded two sacks for a loss of 15 yards.
The controlled contest featured 45 passes, 34 rushes and 441 yards of total offense (5.6 yards per play). Head coach Ruffin McNeill and his staff treated the scrimmage as a regular-season game rehearsal with the Pirates going through their full warm-up, pregame and halftime routines.
"I thought we did some really good things again today," McNeill said. "The scrimmage had big plays on both sides of the ball. The offense did some special things with long plays and the defense came up with big stops to create turnovers on downs. I'm anxious to watch the film and see where we are."
Davis and Bullock began the contest quickly, leading the team 70 yards downfield for a score with Bullock's 50-yard rush capping the drive. Following a three-and-out, Johnson and Lewis hooked up for a 49-yard score. Lewis' second touchdown, and the only other TD of the scrimmage, came on a 27-yard pass by Davis.
Davis guided the offense to nine first downs and scores on three of his four possessions while Johnson produced six first downs and the Lewis touchdown. Wornick completed nine-of-10 passes for 82 yards while Carden was four-of-six.
"[Offensive coordinator] Lincoln Riley is a great quarterbacks coach," McNeill said of the play of his signal callers. "They're progressing fundamentally each day, Dominique from last year to now and Rio from last spring to now. Brad is just a football player; he understands it and gets it done."
Lewis' 82 yards led the way for the receivers, but inside receiver Justin Jones caught the most passes with five for 65 yards. Inside receiver Danny Webster and Dobson each caught three passes with outside receiver Mike Price gaining 30 yards on two grabs. The 17-member receiving corps averaged exactly 10.0 yards per catch.
For the special teams, Michael Barbour converted all three points after touchdowns and made two of his three field-goal attempts, drilling 41 and 22-yard tries but missing wide right from 52 yards away.
"It's pretty consistent," McNeill added about his goals going into the scrimmage. "I want to make sure we play hard and smart. We have to take care of the football and continue to compete. I was pleased with all those aspects today."
Defensively, free safety Damon Magazu and end Matt Milner tied for the lead with five tackles each. One of Milner's stops was a sack for a loss of one yard. Defensive back Rahkeem Morgan also chipped in, contributing a squad-best two pass breakups. Overall, the unit registered five sacks (-34 yards) and four pass breakups.
The Pirates will take Sunday off before returning to the Cliff Moore Practice Complex Monday for their final day of preseason camp.
