GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina Head Football Coach Ruffin McNeill began his second fall leading the Pirates by welcoming 105 members of his preseason roster to campus Thursday afternoon as team officially reported for work to kick off the 2011 campaign.
The student-athletes moved into Aycock Dorm on campus before handling traditional check-in responsibilities such as physicals, equipment-fitting sessions and mandated NCAA meetings. ECU then began preparations for its initial practice of camp scheduled for Friday afternoon.
This season, the Pirates will have a much more experienced roster after fielding one of the youngest teams in the country a year ago as 24 players started their first career game in 2010. Fifteen starters return - five offensive, six defensive and four special teams members.
Seniors and national honors candidates Dominique Davis, Lance Lewis and Michael Barbour will be counted on to lead an explosive offense, which shattered or matched 29 team or individual school standards last season. East Carolina finished the season standing eighth nationally in passing offense (318.7 ypg), 16th in scoring offense (36.8 ppg) and 25th in total offense (437.6 ypg).
Davis, the Conference USA Newcomer-of-the-Year, rated as one of the nation's top signal-callers, ranking first in completions per game (30.2), second in points per game responsible for (21.4), third in touchdown passes (37), fourth in passing yards per game (305.2) and total passing yards (3,967), and seventh in total offense per game (316.0).
Newcomers to East Carolina's squad include junior college transfers Chris Baker (OLB), Reggie Bullock (RB), John Lattimore (DE), and Leroy Vick (NG) as well as true freshmen Jeton Beavers (DE), Zeek Bigger (ILB/OLB), Antonio Cannon (OWR), Chris Hairston (RB), Isaac Harris (OL), Glen Hilliard (DB), Stewart Hinson (OL), Cody Keith (QB), Domonique Lennon (DB), Chaz Lowery (OL), Montese Overton (ILB/OLB), Jonathan Powers (OL), Tre Robertson (OL), Rocco Scarfone (DB), Terrell Stanley (NG), C.J. Struyk (DS), Donte Sumpter (IWR), Danny Webster (IWR) and Johnathon White (DE). Keith, Webster and Vick, from Georgia Military College, enrolled in January and were able to go through the spring practice period with the Pirates.
In addition to the signees, ECU's camp roster is also bolstered by three new invited walk-ons. Freshmen Joshua Hawkins (DB), Demetrius McKelvie (OLB) and Brandon Williams (ILB) all reported to camp Thursday afternoon.
