GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina volleyball team is slated to host the 2012 Pirate Invitational Thursday, Sept. 13 - Saturday, Sept. 15. Coming to town to go up against the Pirates are conference rival Marshall, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), and Coastal Carolina.
The Pirates are coming off an 0-3 showing at the Duke Classic last weekend where ECU dropped contests to Northeastern (0-3), Duke (0-3), and Elon (1-3). The trio of losses extends the Pirates' losing streak to seven matches as ECU's last victory came at the East Carolina Classic August 24-25, at Minges Coliseum.
Marshall comes to East Carolina owning a 13-2 record in the all-time series and is 7-4 on the year. UMBC and the Pirates will meet for just the third time in program history and the series is evened at one match apiece. The Retrievers are 5-9 during 2012. Coastal Carolina trails in the all-time series against ECU, as the Pirates hold an 11-6 record. The Chanticleers will enter Minges Coliseum with a 1-5 overall mark this season.
The Pirate Invitational opens with East Carolina and Marshall on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m., and continues Friday, Sept. 14, with a pair of matches beginning with Marshall and Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m., followed by ECU and UMBC at 7 p.m. The tournament will conclude Saturday, Sept. 15, with a trio of matches throughout the day beginning with UMBC versus Coastal Carolina at 10 a.m., followed by Marshall against UMBC at 4 p.m., and will wrap up with Coastal Carolina at ECU at 7 p.m.
