Pirates Face Early Road Test At UNCG

ECU Heads To UNCG For Early Road Contest
- Following a season-opening 97-51 win over Division II North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday night, ECU will faces its first Division I opponent of the year Tuesday night when in faces UNCG at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Pirates will be looking to start the season 2-0 for the second straight year and third time in four years under coach Jeff Lebo.
- The Pirates have won six straight games dating back to last season, tied with Baylor for the third longest streak in the nation behind Louisville (17) and Texas Southern (13).
- Tuesday's game against UNCG is the Pirates' first of three scheduled true non-conference road games this season. East Carolina will also play at NC State and Campbell with a possibility of playing Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the second round of the NIT Tip-Off. A year ago, ECU went 4-4 on the road in non-conference play. It is 13-23 in true road the last three years with a 3-8 mark against non-league foes.
- East Carolina has played 18 non-conference games against Division I in-state rivals posting a 12-8 record, but just a 2-3 record in those games on the road.
- East Carolina is 2-1 all-time at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Pirates defeated UNCG, 82-61 (Nov. 28, 2009), during the 2009-10 season after falling to Wake Forest at the venue during the same year. ECU returned to the coliseum two years later to post a 71-62 win over the Spartans on Dec. 16, 2011.
Quick Hits About East Carolina
- Junior Paris Roberts-Campbell is the lone returning starter from last year's 23-13 CIT Championship team. Senior Akeem Richmond is the Pirates' lone double figure returning scorer (10.9).
- Richmond led Conference USA with 3.00 3-point field goals made per game last season, sinking and ECU record 105 3s, ninth-most in the history of the 18-year old conference. He is the second-leading returning 3-point shooter in the conference after ranking fifth in the league with a .420 shooting percentage behind the arc last season.
- Sophomores Marshall Guilmette, Prince Williams and Michael Zangari each made their first career starts Friday night against N.C. Wesleyan combing for 17 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists.
- Junior college transfer Antonio Robinson is a native of the Triad area, growing up in Winston-Salem and playing at Parkland High School.
About The UNCG Spartans
- Led by third-year coach Wes Miller, UNCG is coming off a 9-22 season last year. Just like ECU, UNCG has one returning starter (David Williams) and eight returning lettermen.
- The Spartans opened the 2013-14 season with an 82-74 win over High Point at the Greensboro Coliseum on Friday. Kayel Locke and Kyle Cain each scored 21 points in the victory.
- Both teams will face Chowan and NC State this season.
Lebo VS. His Fellow UNC Alums
- ECU head coach Jeff Lebo is 6-2 against his fellow University of North Carolina alums since coming to Greenville. Among those victories include two wins each over UNCG Head Coach Wes Miller (`07)two against Appalachian State coach Jason Capel (`02), with one victory against SMU coaches Matt Doherty (`84) and Larry Brown (`63). One of his two losses also came to Doherty, while the other was against his alma mater coached by Roy Williams (`72).
On The Road Instate
- ECU will be looking to earn its first road win in the Old North State since defeating UNCG at the Greensboro Coliseum in 2011. The Pirates lost both of their instate road games last season falling to Charlotte and North Carolina. ECU is 3-3 when it makes a bus trip in the Tar Heel state the last three seasons.
Freshmen Have Impressive Debut
- ECU's freshman class of Greg Alexander, Brandan Stith and Caleb White made their career debuts Friday night combining for 27 points and 14 rebounds. Stith was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double. White also finished in double figures with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, making his lone 3-point attempt. Alexander also got into the scorebook with a baseline jumper.
More Points, More Wins
- The Pirates scored over 90 points for seventh time under coach Jeff Lebo Friday night and posted their seventh victory. In fact during Lebo's tenure, ECU has accumulated a record of 18-5 when scoring 80 or more points. Out of the five losses, two were in overtime.
Higher Percentage Of Makes = Victory
- East Carolina has shot over 50 percent from the field just 19 times since the start of the 2010-11 season. However, in those games the Pirates have been victorious 14 times including this past Friday night's season-opener. ECU has won seven straight games when shooting better than 50 percent dating back to last season and has made over half their field goals attempts dating back to last season's CIT semifinal win over Evansville.
