BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Akeem Richmond tied his career-high with points and hit 10 3-pointers in lifting East Carolina past Campbell 79-71 Thursday night at Gore Arena, snapping a two-game losing streak.
Richmond set arena records for points, 3-point field goals made and attempted (17), while tying his own school and Conference USA record for 3s. He also made 10 3-pointers against Fayetteville State earlier this season.
Michael Zangari added 13 points in the victory, while Caleb White scored 12. Antonio Robinson and Paris Roberts-Campbell led the Pirates (11-4) with seven rebounds each, while White handed out a career-best six assists.
The Pirates (11-4) finished shooting 57.4 percent from the field (27-47), including a season-best 56.5 percent behind the arc (13-23). In addition to Richmond's 10-of-17 performance from 3, White was 2-of-3 and Roberts-Campbell was 1-for-3.
Campbell's Reco McCarter scored a career-high 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting with 5 assists for the Camels (6-8). Marvelle Harris came off the bench to add season highs of 16 points on 8-of-10 from the field and 12 rebounds and Darius Leonard contributed 12 points.
Richmond scored the game's first eight points and ECU built an 11-point lead, 26-15, less than 11 minutes into the contest. However, Campbell used a 20-9 run to tied the game at 35 on a 3 from McCarter.
Campbell led at the break 39-37 as it dominated the offensive glass scoring 16 points off nine offensive rebounds.
The second period saw East Carolina once again break out to an early lead at 50-44 lead as it opened the half on a 13-4 run. Richmond scored the Pirates' first nine points, all on 3s; his second of the half put ECU ahead for good.
The senior from Sanford, N.C., knocked down 7-of-12 treys in a 24-point final period.
ECU led 65-57 with 8:34 to play, following another 3 from Richmond. McCarter brought Campbell back within two, 70-68, with four minutes left.
Richmond made two free throws and Zangari scored underneath pushing the lead back out to six, 74-68, with 1:28 remaining. Richmond and Robinson combined for 7 of 8 from the charity stripe and the Pirates pulled away for the win.
ECU shot 68.4 percent from the field (13-19) in the second half, while holding the Camels to 38.2 percent.
