ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Former East Carolina standout John Wooten has been selected to participate in the 55th Annual South Atlantic League (SAL) All-Star Game, league president Eric Krupa announced Tuesday afternoon.
Wooten, a 2012 First-Team All-Conference USA selection for the Pirates, has appeared in 50 games for the Hagerstown Suns - Class A affiliate for the Washington Nationals - where he is batting a team-best .316 (61-for-193) with four home runs and 31 RBI.
The Goldsboro, N.C. native ranks among the Sally League leaders (top-20) in seven offensive categories including doubles (eighth/15), average (t10th/.316) and runs scored (12th/32).
Originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 37th round in 2012, Wooten was traded to the Nationals last November following his second season with the Class-A Beloit Snappers, where he batted .257 with 20 home runs, 22 doubles and 69 RBI in 133 games.
Joining Wooten on the Northern Division All-Star squad is former Pirate hurler and 2001 ABCA All-America selection Sam Narron, who has been named the Pitching Coach. In his first season with the Hagerstown, Narron has guided the Suns pitching staff to at SAL-best 39 wins, while ranking fifth with a 3.47 ERA.
The Mid-Summer Classic will be played on June 17 at L.P. Fans Stadium in Hickory, N.C., home of the Hickory Crawdads.
