Pirate Trio Takes Home Weekly Honors

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Following East Carolina's 28-21 win at No. 17 Virginia Tech on Saturday, a trio of Pirates have earned weekly honors highlighted by junior Josh Hawkins' selection as the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week.
Hawkins, who was also named College Sports Madness National Defensive Player-of-the-Week, led a Pirate defense that limited the Hokies to 21 points by picking off a pair of Michael Brewer first half passes, which came on successive possessions. The Winston-Salem, N.C. native added eight tackles, one tackle for loss and a pass breakup helping East Carolina to its first win in Blacksburg, Va., since 1991.
Senior Shane Carden, who earned his second career ESPN Helmet Sticker Saturday evening, completed 23 of 47 passes for 427 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for the game-winning score with 16 seconds in the Pirates victory. The Houston, Texas product set school records for career completions (741) and touchdown passes (63), while moving into sole possession of second place in passing yards (8,286).
Rounding out weekly honors was senior outside receiver Cam Worthy who hauled down a career-best six passes for a career-high 224 yards (37.3 ypc) against the Hokies defense. The Blair, S.C. native became just the third receiver in school history to post 200-plus yards receiving in a game falling six shy of the school record, which is held by current teammate Justin Hardy - 230 at Tulane last year.

The Pirates (2-1) will wrap up their non-conference schedule playing host to instate rival North Carolina (2-0) inside a sold out Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. (EDT) and will be televised on ESPNU.
