Carden Named Candidate For Senior CLASS Award Senior Quarterback Has Guided East Carolina To A 2-1 Record In 2014
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina senior quarterback Shane Carden has been named among 30 candidates vying for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in college football.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
Carden, who received his bachelor's degree in sports studies last December, is currently working on a graduate degree in instructional technology. A two-time team captain and one of the nation's premier passers, Carden earned inclusion on several preseason watch lists most notably the Davey O'Brien, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, Manning, Maxwell and Walter Camp awards.
An active member in the community, Carden has volunteered his time working with the Ronald McDonald House and reading to local elementary schools. He is a two-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member and a fan favorite around Greenville.
Carden, who has led ECU to a 2-1 record, guided the Pirates to a 28-21 victory last Saturday at then-No. 17 Virginia Tech, running for the game-winning touchdown with 16 seconds remaining on the clock. In all, he completed 23 of 47 passes for 427 yards and accounted for all four scores (three pass/one rush).
During the contest, the Houston, Texas, native set school records for career completions (741) and touchdown passes (63), and also moved into sole possession of second place in passing yards (8,286). For the season, he has 1,031 yards passing with seven touchdowns against two interceptions.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January.
