PROVIDENCE, R.I. - East Carolina outside hitter Ashton Mares was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after helping the Pirates to a pair of league wins over the weekend.
The sophomore had a team-high 20 kills on Friday night in a five-set win against Tulane and posted 11 kills in the Pirates' sweep of first-place Houston Sunday. She also registered double digit digs in both matches for her fifth and sixth double-doubles of the season. Mares has posted a double-double in three consecutive matches. Mares' 20 kills against the Green Wave matched her American conference career-best as she also had 20 against Houston as a freshman.
She finished the weekend with 31 total kills and 24 digs en route to her first career weekly honor roll distinction.
Mares was joined on the weekly list by UCF's Jale Hervey, SMU's Janelle Giordano, Temple's Alyssa Drachslin and Tulsa's Brooke Berryhill. Jordan Thompson of Cincinnati was named Offensive Plaeyer-of-the-Week and Houston's Olivia O'Dell was selected Defensive Player-of-the-Week.
Mares and the Pirates return to conference play on Friday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on UConn. ECU will then travel to Philadelphia to face Temple on Sunday, Oct. 18.
