Figueroa, Montes Named ECU Student-Athlete of the Month

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina senior volleyball player Erika Figueroa and redshirt junior distance runner Jorge Montes were selected as the female and male Student-Athlete of the Month following an outstanding September for the pair both athletically and academically.
Figueroa, a team captain and libero, earned the honors after surpassing 1,000 career digs and moving into eighth all-time at ECU en route to being named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week (9/26). She also was named to the South Carolina Classic All-Tournament Team and finished the month averaging 5.13 digs per set.
Off the court, the SAAC representative has maintained a 3.58 grade-point average as an exercise physiology major, while completing 17.5 hours of community service.
Montes, who runs both cross country and track at ECU, collected the accolades after leading the Pirates at the ECU Invitational on Friday, September 18. He completed the 5K in 15:34.43 to place second overall and was East Carolina's top finisher.
In addition to his training and competing, Montes has maintained a 3.03 grade-point average as an economics major and has completed four hours of community service during the month of September.
The pair look to continue to lead their respective programs as Figueroa and the volleyball team return home Friday, Oct. 9 to host Tulane at 7 p.m., while Montes and the Pirate cross country squad will see action next Friday, Oct. 16 at the Wake Forest Open in Kernersville, N.C.
