East Carolina Falls to Little Rock, Faces Stetson Next
November 26, 2015 | Men's Basketball
LAS VEGAS --- An 8-0 spurt, including consecutive 3s from Marcus Johnson, Jr. and Josh Hagins midway through the second half was just enough to lead Little Rock to a 54-46 win over East Carolina at the Continental Tie Las Vegas Invitational Thanksgiving Day at Orleans Arena.
The spurt occurred during a game in which both teams struggled shooting the basketball. Little Rock shot 26.3 percent (15-of-57) and ECU shot 31.0 percent (13-of-42), both season lows for each team.
East Carolina (2-3) got a season-high 12 points from sophomore B.J. Tyson, who reached double figures for the first time this season, and matched his career-high with eight rebounds for the second straight game.
Little Rock (4-0) received a game-high 13 points from Johnson and 11 from Hagins. The Trojans forced ECU into committing 22 turnovers and converted those extra opportunities in 24 points.
The Pirates led by eight at halftime, 23-15, as they limited Little Rock to three first half field goals, despite shooting just 34.6 percent from the field. The tables were reversed in the second half as East Carolina made just four field goals as the Trojans rained in four 3-pointers.
ECU built a 10-point lead in the first half using a 12-2 spurt to go up 21-11 with 2:38 to play. Prince Williams and Tyson nailed consecutive 3s to start the surge. Clarence Williams then scored four of the next six points to cap the outburst.
The Pirates maintained the lead for the first 10:01 of the second half until Kenny Osse's 3-pointer gave Little Rock its first lead, 29-27, since scoring the opening basket.
The Trojans outscored East Carolina 26-8 during a 15-minute stretch that elapsed over both halves that ended with Little Rock out in front by eight, 37-29, with 7:42 to play.
The Pirates got within four with 28 seconds to play, but Johnson made 4-of-4 free throws in the final moments to secure the Trojans' victory.
East Carolina will return to action Friday, Nov. 27, against Stetson at 2 p.m. PST.
