PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- East Carolina freshman Kentrell Barkley has been named The American Rookie-of-the-Week following his performances against College of Charleston and N.C. A&T last week, the league office announced Monday.
Barkley averaged 16.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game as East Carolina split a pair of matchups last week. He posted his first career double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds at College of Charleston on Monday and registered 11 points, seven rebounds and a career-high six assists in Sunday's win over North Carolina A&T. Barkley led the Pirates in scoring against CofC and was their top rebounder in both games last week.
The Durham native leads East Carolina in rebounding with 6.9 boards per game and ranks third on the team in scoring (10.7 ppg) and minutes played (23.0 mpg).
Barkley was honored along with SMU forward Jordan Tolbert, who was named The American Player-of-the-Week after he led No. 19 SMU to an 82-58 win over Michigan in the Mustangs' only game of the week. He led all players with 23 points on 11-of-12 (.916) shooting and added nine rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.
