Pirates Head To Charleston Searching For First Road Win
December 06, 2015 | Men's Basketball
CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Looking for its fourth consecutive victory and its first road win of the season, the East Carolina men's basketball team travels to the South Carolina Lowcountry to take on College of Charleston Monday night at 7 p.m. inside TD Arena. It'll be the first meeting between the two since 1992.
The game can heard across the Pirate-IMG Radio Network on flagship station WNCT 107.9 throughout eastern North Carolina, On Demand or on the Tunein app. Live statistics and a video stream are available at cofcsports.com.
During its three-game winning streak, East Carolina (5-3) has averaged 83 points and shot 54.1 percent from the floor and 38.3 percent from 3-point range. The Pirate defense has also been on locked down, yielding just 64.0 points per game over the past three contests. To put that into perspective, ECU averaged 54.0 points and shot 32.1 percent from the floor in its previous three games prior to the streak.
While winning by an average of 19 points per game during its current win streak, East Carolina has dominated inside with an overall rebounding margin of plus-28, while outscoring its foes 138-64 in the paint.
After starting the season 6 of 34 from the field, sophomore B.J. Tyson has found his shooting touch the last four games. Tyson is 27 of 38 (.710) from the floor and averaging 18.8 points per game. He scored a career-high 26 points Friday night against USC Upstate and has led the Pirates in scoring each of the last four games.
Freshman Kentrell Barkley has also had a big impact on the Pirates' recent success, leading them in rebounding in two of the last three games and four times overall this year. The 6-foot-5 Durham, N.C. native leads the Pirates with 6.5 rebounds per game and is third in scoring (9.3 ppg) and minutes played (22.8), trailing only Tyson (13.3/29.5) and Caleb White (12.4/32.8).
The Pirates have shot over 50 percent in three consecutive games for the first time since 2002. They have won all four games in which they've made more than half their shots this season extending their streak of wins when shooting over 50 percent to 22 games.
Continuing its streak will not be easy against the Cougars (5-2), which is holding its opponents to just 40.7 percent shooting from the floor and 64.1 points per game.
CofC has also won three in a row, which includes a victory over LSU here last Monday. The Cougars held the Tigers to just 31.1 shooting in a 70-58 victory behind 19 points from Canyon Barry, son of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame member Rick Barry.
Barry leads the Cougars with 20.0 points per game followed by Cameron Johnson with 12.4 points per contest. The duo has combined to make 27 of the team's 48 3-pointers this season. They have five players averaging four or more rebounds per game led by Jarrell Brantley with 5.4 boards per night.
