GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Following its final two-a-day of fall camp, East Carolina returned to Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex for its 15th workout with a three-hour morning session in shoulder pads.
Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Ruffin McNeill, the Pirates continued their scrimmage preparations focusing on red zone and goal line situations for 20 minutes in a pair of breakout unit sessions.
"I thought we had a solid outing today," McNeill said. "It was more of an "ooh" practice where we saw a bunch of things we liked. This is a quite group that likes to lead by their play on the field, which is different from what we've had the last two seasons. We are continuing to progress and I like the competition for spots on the field.
East Carolina's morning workout began with their customary offensive walk-through and positional drills before diving into periods of the quick game and routes in the air.
During 20 minutes of special teams work, the quarterbacks went through a series of drills, while the offensive and defensive lines concentrated on pass rush and blitz coverage's. The Pirates used the 25-minute team-on-team period continuing their focus on red zone before wrapping up with ball security drills.
"Friday's practice will be like a regular in-season Thursday prep day," McNeill added. "Then we will move into the stadium for a closed controlled environment Saturday, where it will be as game-like as possible. We will use that time to work on sideline discipline, substitution packages, fundamentals and techniques in front of the American Athletic Conference officials."
