PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior libero Erika Figueroa was named American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after helping East Carolina to a 1-1 record over the weekend while tallying more than 1,000 career digs. The announcement was made Monday afternoon by the league office.
"I am so proud of Erika and her accomplishments as a player on this team," Head coach Julie Torbett said. " When I got here, she had all the potential to make a great libero. In that position, it's all about instincts and reading the game. It takes a very smart player to excel at libero."
In her four years at East Carolina, Figueroa has recorded 1,020 career digs and ranks eighth all-time at ECU. As a senior, she has amassed 247 digs to average 5.04 digs per set which is good for third in the American Athletic Conference.
The Orlando, Fla., native turned in another solid effort on defense over the weekend as she led ECU to a four-set win at Memphis after the Pirates fell, 3-1, at Cincinnati. Figueroa finished the weekend averaging 5.88 digs per set after accumulating 22 digs against the Bearcats and 25 versus the Tigers.
"Not only is Erika a great defensive player, but she is also a great teammate, captain, SAAC rep and student," Torbett said of her starting libero.
Figueroa was named Player of the Week along with Kirsten Overton of Temple, who garnered Offensive accolades.
