GREENVILLE, N.C.- Kentrell Barkley scored 13 points, collected 10 rebounds and his 3-point play with one second left lifted East Carolina to a 64-61 win over Temple Wednesday night.
Barkley gathered an offensive rebound off Prince Williams' miss with five seconds left before burying the game winner. Williams - who finished with 18 points - scored seven straight points for the Pirates before the miss.
"Well I was just trying to go after the ball wherever I could get it," Barkley said. "I happened to be there and tried to finish strong at the basket."
Temple's Josh Brown made two free throws with 21 seconds left to tie it at 61.
Obi Enechionyia hit a 3 with 9:31 left to play to give Temple at 52-47 lead, the largest lead either team held in the contest.
Barkley scored four straight points to bring the Pirates within one before Tyson gave them the lead back, 54-52, with 3:47 to play. The Owls tied the game four times, but ECU never fell behind.
"Just a terrific win for our kids, for our program," ECU Head Coach Jeff Lebo said. "I don't even think the guys, our players, understand what a big win that actually was. They're a team that beat SMU, Cincinnati twice, at Connecticut. With all the adversity we've faced this year, to win that game with these guys is a really special moment, special in that locker room."
East Carolina (10-11, 2-6 American Athletic) got 14 points from B.J. Tyson. Williams and Tyson made 12 of East Carolina's 25 field goals.
The Pirates scored 22 points in transition and limited held Temple (11-8, 5-3) scoreless and also converted 14 Owl errors into 12 points. ECU committed just eight turnovers.
East Carolina made 11 of 12 free throws, making all four of its attempts in the final three minutes.
Enechionyia led the Owls with 18 points.
