East Carolina Falls To Temple 3-0 In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple hit .419 as a team to capture a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) American Athletic Conference volleyball victory over East Carolina Sunday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. Â

The Rundown: Senior outside hitter I'Tiana Taylor tallied a team-high 12 kills while junior middle hitter Natalie Montini followed with 10 of her own. Freshman libero Brandee Markwith collected nine digs as the Pirates' top statistical defensive performer. Irem Asci paced the Owls with 19 kills, nine digs and a .552 hitting percentage.

Temple racked up 49 kills on 93 attempts and committed just 10 attacking errors while holding ECU to 35 kills and a .155 hitting mark. The Owls also racked up seven total blocks to the Pirates' one.

Set One: With the score in favor of Temple early at 6-5, the Owls rattled off five straight to take early control of the set. Temple later led by 10 at 23-13 before three consecutive Pirate points prompted an Owl timeout. Out of the break, Temple put down two-straight kills to capture the stanza.

Set Two: A Montini kill kept the Pirates close to the Owls, trailing 6-5 before Temple notched eight of the next 13 points to assume a 14-10 advantage. An ace by junior defensive specialist Megan Williams later knotted things at 15 and forced the Owls to call for time. However, Temple recovered and utilized a 5-2 run to move ahead 20-17 before eventually clinching the frame by six points.

Set Three: The teams battled it out to begin the final set but, as in the previous two, the Owls began to pull away. Temple led by as much as 18-12 before finally fending off East Carolina and winning the stanza by five points.

Bits and Pieces: ECU dropped to 7-6 in true road matches … The Pirates averaged 2.57 blocks per set over two matches this weekend thanks to a 17-block performance at UConn Friday … Senior setter Sabrina Gonzalez moved into sole possession of seventh place on the program assist list as she now owns 1,997 in a Pirate uniform … Temple improved to 6-0 against East Carolina in the all-time series.

Up Next: ECU heads back to Greenville next weekend for its final homestand of the season, hosting Houston and Tulane. The Pirates will honor their senior class Thursday immediately after the 7 p.m. match against the Cougars.
