Education Day Continues Its Successful Run Wednesday In Minges
November 15, 2016 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. - An event that has broken East Carolina Women's Basketball's single-game attendance record each of the last two seasons, Education Day will once again shine its light on Williams Arena for the fourth-straight season when ECU hosts UNCW on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
The event has grown in participation by local schools each of the last three years, after the inaugural event on Nov. 8, 2013 drew approximately 1,800 students from the Pitt County School District to watch the Pirates' 102-47 victory over Virginia Intermont. Attendance has tripled over the last two years following the 89-60 victory over Delaware on Nov. 21, 2014 that brought in 4,935 fans and last year's game against Presbyterian on Nov. 20, 2015 totaled an attendance of 5,408 - the largest to ever see an ECU women's basketball game in Greenville. Below is a video recap of the record-breaking occasion:
Quick math indicates Education Day has brought more than 12,000 youths into Minges Coliseum in just three games. With approximately 6,000 middle school and 2,000 fifth-grade students in the Pitt County School District, there is still room for growth for the event.
Education Day has been an initiative geared toward bringing local students to a college campus for what could be their first time. Halftime videos illustrating pictures of the university, tips from admissions counselors and a presentation from local student-athletes serve as up-close encounters of exposure to college life.
