Pirates Set To Face Tulane In The Big Easy
February 23, 2016 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS --- East Carolina will be looking to break its six-game losing streak on Wednesday as the Pirates head to Tulane, hoping to even up the season series after falling to the Green Wave in triple overtime two weeks ago.
Tulane (10-17, 3-11) had lost six straight before outlasting the Pirates and has won two of its last three, but hasn't played since losing to Houston on Feb. 17.
East Carolina (10-17, 2-12) is coming off a 74-63 loss at No. 21 SMU on Sunday. The Pirates led by seven late in the first half, but the Mustangs closed on an 8-0 run to take the lead which they never relinquished. Kentrell Barkley, Caleb White and Prince Williams each made four 3s in the game as ECU finished 12 of 24 outside the arc with 19 assists on 23 total made field goals.
Williams posted his fourth 20-point performance in the past eight contests, matching his career-high for 3-pointers made. Over the last eight games averaging 18.4 points per game and shooting 51.0 percent from the field (52-of-102) and 48.7 percent from 3 (19-of-39).
Williams is averaging a career-high 10.6 points per game (ppg) and had made four times as many 3s this season (32) as his previous three years combined (8).
White seems to have regained his touch from outside the arc as well after suffering a concussion on Jan. 19. He is shooting 45.8 percent from 3 (11-of-24) the last three games, averaging 13.3 ppg. He's made 62 triples this season and has put ECU on the cusp of its sixth-consecutive 200 3-point field goal campaign. The Pirates are third in The American in 3-pointers per game and fourth in 3-point percentage.
Despite his recent struggles, B.J. Tyson continues to lead ECU in scoring with 14.6 ppg, ranking ninth in the conference.
Tulane senior Louis Dabney ranks just behind Tyson with 14.5 ppg as the Green Wave's top scorer. He dropped 32 on the Pirates two weeks ago, going 11-of-20 from the floor. Mailk Morgan (12.5 ppg) and Dylan Ostekowski (11.4 rpg), who is one of three players in the conference to average nine or more rebounds per game.
The Green Wave has won three in a row over East Carolina, but the Pirates have won each of the last two meetings in New Orleans. Wednesday's matchup will be the 21st meeting between ECU and Tulane with the Green Wave holding a 13-7 series advantage.
