Pirates Go For Second Straight Home Win Against Cincinnati
February 26, 2016 | Men's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- After picking up its first win in nearly a month Wednesday night, East Carolina will go for its second straight win overall and at home against Cincinnati on Saturday at noon inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum, where the Pirates bested the Bearcats, 50-46, on Super Bowl Sunday a year ago.
Last season, the Pirates scored the final 11 points to rally from seven down with 3:23 to steal a victory. B.J. Tyson scored the go-ahead basket with 1:02 to play to top off his 18-point effort.
Prior to that game, Cincinnati had won all eight meetings in the series.
Two weeks ago the Bearcats exacted a measure of revenge against the Pirates with a 75-60 win at Fifth-Third Arena in Cincinnati. Five players scored in double figures led by double-double performances from senior Octavius Ellis (16 points, 11 rebounds) and sophomore Gary Clark (15 points, 12 rebounds).
Cincinnati followed that win with an overtime loss at Tulsa before taking down UConn to sweep the season series last Saturday. The Bearcats, who are in fourth place in The American, haven't played since.
ECU moved out of the cellar with its win over Tulane Wednesday night led by 22 points from Tyson with Lance Tejada adding a career-high 18. The Pirates led by 12 with 10 minutes to play only to have Tulane cut the lead to two with 1:06 remaining, but Tyson buried a 3 28 seconds later to deny the Green Wave comeback.
Tyson leads a foursome of double figures scorers for East Carolina with 14.6 points per game (ppg), while Troy Caupain ranks first among the Bearcats' trio of double-digit performers with 11.6 ppg.
Cincinnati and ECU rank two and three in The American in both assists per game and 3-point field goals per game. The Bearcats also rank second in scoring defense, field goal percent defense and scoring margin, while the Pirates rank in the lower third of the league in all three categories.
