"This is our last opportunity to achieve some really good marks before the AAC Outdoor Championships," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We feel like we are rested both mentally and physically going into this meet at Duke. We had a week off after our home meet to get healthy and get some good training in, as well as enjoy some great weather."
In its most recent competition, ECU swept the Bill Carson Invitational men's and women's team titles in its own facility. The Pirates defeated NC State, Troy, The Citadel, High Point, Charlotte and Coastal Carolina.
East Carolina captured nine event titles in all over the weekend and turned in a number of top three finishes across the board. Senior Avion Jones won the high jump with a season-best mark of 2.20 meters and supplemented that effort with a second-place result in the triple jump at 15.27 meters.
A trio of ladies snatched event titles in the field as sophomore Jada Cunningham won the long jump (5.72m), senior Kayla Padgett took the hammer title (62.57m) and sophomore Galissia Cause topped the field in the shot put (14.92m).
On the track, senior Janieyah Collins finished first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.32, junior Caitlyn Sheva won the 3,000-meter steeplechase - crossing the line in 11:31.67 and freshman Tia Jackson captured the 400-meter run title with a time of 57.44. Freshman Stefano Migliorati and sophomore Pol Solanelles won their respective mid-distance events with times of 1:52.92 and 3:59.16 in the 800 and 1,500-meter disciplines.
The Pirates have individuals or relay teams ranked in the top three in the AAC in nine events. Additionally, Jones is ranked sixth in the nation in the high jump while Padgett is fourth in the hammer.
The American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships are scheduled for May 12-15 at the UCF Soccer and Track Complex in Orlando, Fla.
