GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina track and field program competed in the Duke Invitational this weekend and came away with seven event titles at Morris Williams Stadium.
"Our men's and women's teams both had a great weekend," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We won a number of different events and had numerous personal bests. Everyone feels really good about their performances at this point in the year. The momentum that we have created this past weekend will hopefully carry into the AAC championships in three weeks. We have to continue to get better and stay healthy going into that meet."
Junior Jorge Montes broke his own school record in the 5,000-meter run by posting a time of 14:33.77 to finish seventh in the event. He is now third in the AAC.
Senior Avion Jones improved his American Athletic Conference-best high jump mark to 2.22 meters in winning the event title and moving up to fourth in the national ranks. He also took second place in the triple jump with a mark of 15.40 meters - the second highest in the league currently.
The Pirates swept the top three places in the men's shot put with junior Adam Manns taking first place with a mark of 16.40. Freshman Evan McCracken and junior Jalen Peterkin snatched second and third place with respective totals of 15.98 and 15.92 meters. Manns also won the discus with a mark of 51.88 meters.
