ORLANDO, Fla. - The East Carolina track and field program closed out its participation in the 2016 AAC Outdoor Championships Sunday with the women placing fourth and the men fifth in the team standings.
Both sides improved their showings from last season's event when the men and women finished in sixth place. Houston won the men's team title while Cincinnati captured the women's championship.
Senior Avion Jones capped off a phenomenal career in the league by earning Field Performer of the Meet accolades - an award he also won at this year's AAC Indoor Championships.
"Both teams performed unbelievably," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "I am so proud of what they accomplished this weekend. It's totally amazing what can be accomplished when everyone works together towards a common goal. From top to bottom, we accomplished everything we talked about before this meet started. We moved up two spots on the women's side and one spot on the men's side from the 2015 meet. All I ask is that we continue to make improvements in everything we do. As long as we are moving in the right direction, we will eventually achieve the goal we are striving for and that is to be AAC Champs."
In the men's triple jump, seniors Allen Bordley and Jones took second and third place with identical marks of 15.58 meters. Juniors Adam Manns and Jalen Peterkin also racked up points in the shot put, placing fourth and fifth with marks of 17.50 and 17.00 meters.
The women also fared well in the field events as sophomore Galissia Cause finished second in the shot put by tossing the rock a school-record 15.77 meters. Senior Raqurra Ishmar, coming off her win in yesterday's discus event, placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 15.35 meters.
On the track, the men's 4x100 relay team of sophomore Tamarack Bolden, freshman Hakeem Horton, sophomore Jordan Martin and junior Vincent Ragland took the silver medal in a time of 39.97. Bolden also claimed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.84 after producing the top time in the prelims.
In the 800-meter run, freshman Stefano Migliorati captured the bronze medal by crossing the line in a time of 1:50.34. Senior Janeiyah Collins won silver in the 400-meter hurdles by reducing her prelims time by more than a second and finishing the final in a time of 59.43.
Next up for the Pirates is the NCAA East Regional, scheduled for May 26-27 in Jacksonville, Fla. The top 50 athletes in each event from both the East and West Regions will qualify for the event.
