ECU Returns To Full-Pad Single-Practice Session
August 10, 2016 | Football
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Following its first two-a-day on Tuesday, East Carolina returned to Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex for a near two-hour evening session in full pads Wednesday.
First-year head coach Scottie Montgomery and his staff devoted a total of 24 minutes to team-on-team work using all levels of the preseason depth chart with emphasis on first-and-10 and third-and-short during both periods. The offensive and defensive units spent a collective 18 minutes in skeleton or one-on-one drills while the line units concentrated on footwork and blocking assignments.
"Tonight was probably our best practice of fall camp start to finish and from an alignment and assignment standpoint," Montgomery said. "These are the types of practices we need to have if we are going to be a good football team. Now we have to stack another great practice on top of tonight and then another. That consistency will make us a good football team. When we hit the field tonight we had great energy, a great finish and our guys knew exactly where to line up. Once again our run game was really good and is starting to click. Defensively we made some good plays and had some young guys with great rushes and pressure on the offense."
The Pirates spent 24 minutes on special teams work, while the offensive and defensive line units used their time focusing on blitz and pass rush packages along with formation adjustments. The skill positions continued to polish their route-running efficiency against the defensive backs utilizing 21 minutes of practice with routes vs. air. The evening ended with five minutes of conditioning with strength coach Jeff Connors and his staff.
East Carolina will conduct the second of four two-a-days on Thursday before returning to a single night practice Friday in helmets, and then its first intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday morning inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Single-game, three-game mini packs and season tickets for all ECU home games are still available to the Pirate Nation and can be purchased by calling the ECU Athletic Ticket Office at 252-737-4500, through the Online Ticket Center, or by visiting the ECU Athletics Ticket Office.
