GREENVILLE, N.C. – Eleven events, including a pair of home tournaments, highlight the East Carolina women's golf schedule head coach Kevin Williams announced Wednesday. The Pirates, who have made eight regionals in the last nine years, will also play host to the 2017 Greenville Regional May 8-10 at the Ironwood Golf and Country Club.
"We are very proud of the national reputation of our program and hosting one of the NCAA regionals for the second time adds greatly to this reputation," Williams said. "The 2010 NCAA East Regional was a huge success at Ironwood and everyone is super excited to host once again. We have a reputation as an athletic department of conducting great NCAA events and we are confident the same will continue with the 2017 Greenville (N.C.) Regional at Ironwood."
For the third-straight year, ECU will open the season playing in the Minnesota Invitational (Sept. 12-13), which will be held at the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minn. Two years ago, the Pirates won the invitational posting a 54-hole score of 879 and were led by Frida Gustafsson Span who claimed individual medalist honors.
Eighteen teams highlight the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate – an event the Pirates have won six times in 15 years of hosting including last season. This year's tournament returns to the Greenville Country Club and will be held Sept. 26-27. Up next is the Pinehurst Challenge (Oct. 10-11), which will be played at Pinehurst No. 1 in Pinehurst, N.C. A year ago the Pirates posted a school-record tournament score of 857 (7-under) finishing six shots ahead of Chattanooga.
ECU will welcome 17 teams to participate in the Greenville (NC) Regional Preview at Ironwood Golf and Country Club from Oct. 17-18. The Lee Trevino Signature Golf Course, which is the home of the men's and women's golf programs, will host its second NCAA Regional event later in the season and first since 2010.
"We are very excited to host two home tournaments this fall," Williams added. "Defending our title in the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate will be a priority for our team.
"We used hosting one of the four regional sites this upcoming year as a way to add a second home event and attract a very strong field of teams. Nine of the 18 teams received NCAA bids last year headlined by the University of Oregon, who finished fifth in the country. We also have perennial powers TCU, Mississippi State, Campbell, Augusta State and Clemson coming to Greenville in October and we are pleased to host such a strong group of teams in this event."
Rounding out the fall portion of ECU's schedule is a return trip Louisville, Ky. to participate in the Cardinal Cup. The three-day event will be held from Oct. 23-15 and played at the University of Louisville Golf Club.
A challenging spring schedule begins with a pair of events in the state of Florida. Up first is the UCF Challenge (Feb. 5-7) at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando before the Pirates return later in the month for the Hurricane Invitational (Feb. 27-March 1) at the Biltmore Golf Club in Miami.
ECU will co-host the River Landing Classic with UNC Wilmington March 9-10 at the River Landing Club in Wallace, N.C. Last year, the Pirates took home team honors with a score of 894 finishing four strokes ahead of Penn State for their third team title of the season.
Trips to Charleston, S.C. for the Briar's Creek Invitational (Mar. 20-21) and Napa, Calif. for the Silverado Showdown (April 9-11) precede the American Athletic Conference Championships (April 16-18), which will be played at Hammock Beach in Palm Coast, Fla. for the third consecutive year. The NCAA Championships will be held from May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The Pirates return three starters, junior Lisa Pettersson along with sophomores Catherine Ashworth and Kate Law, from last year's NCAA Regional team. They will be joined by sophomore transfer Carley Cox and a trio of freshmen in Dorthea Forbrigd, Siranon Shoomee and Grace Yatawara.
