GREENVILLE, N.C. – Former East Carolina pitcher Jeff Hoffman's dream finally came true over the weekend when he made his Major League debut on Saturday, Aug. 20 with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Two years after he was selected with the No. 9 overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the right-hander got the start against the red-hot National League leading Chicago Cubs.
Hoffman breezed through the Cubs' all-star lineup first time through the order. Dexter Fowler led the game off with a single but was later erased on Anthony Rizzo's double play ground ball. The Latham, N.Y. native faced the minimum through the first three innings before the Cubs broke through with a four-run fourth inning. Chicago tacked on three more runs in the fifth, highlighted by Kris Bryant's NL-leading 31st home run of the season.
In all, he worked four frames allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts. His first career strikeout came in the second inning when he buckled Jorge Soler with an 84-mph slider to end the second, and blew a 96-mph fastball by Miguel Montero to open the third.
Hoffman, who was called up by the Rockies on Friday, Aug. 19, became the 19th player in school history to see action in the Major Leagues. He is the fifth Pirate hurler since 2013 to make his debut joining Seth Maness (2013) Chris Heston (2014), Mike Wright (2015) and Shawn Armstrong (2015).
