
East Carolina Drops AAC Road Contest At UConn

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) --  Jalen Adams scored 19 points to lead a short-handed UConn squad over East Carolina 72-65 Sunday in American Athletic Conference play.
Four of the six scholarship Huskies (9-11, 3-4) who played scored in double figures to help snap a two-game losing streak. Rodney Purvis had 16 points, while Kentan Facey and Amida Brimah each scored 13. Facey also finished with 10 rebounds for his third double-double in the last four games.
The Pirates (9-11, 1-6) dropped their sixth-straight contest and have not won since the new year. Kentrell Barkley scored 18 points, Elijah Hughes had 14 and Caleb White 13.
UConn held a 38-28 lead at the half and never let it dip below seven points after that. The Huskies shot 54 percent from the field (27-for-50) and used a 21-0 run to grab their largest lead of the first half, 34-14, with six minutes to play.
Adams had 10 points at the break and Facey added nine with eight rebounds as UConn shot 55.6 percent (15-for-27) from the field.
Elijah Hughes ended ECU's almost seven-minute scoreless stretch with a 3-pointer, snapping a 0-for-12 shooting stretch. The Pirates answered back with a 13-0 stretch that trimmed the UConn lead to 34-27 with 1:58 to go.
IT'S A GAME OF RUNS
- UConn scored 21 consecutive points, holding ECU scoreless for 7:24 to build a 34-14 lead with xxx left in the first half.
- ECU closed the first half on a 14-4 run with Hughes scoring seven and Barkley four during the run. The Pirates trailed 38-28 at halftime.
- The Huskies stretched their lead to 14 in the first two minutes of the second half, but ECU went on a 14-7 to pull within seven, 51-44. UConn then scored nine consecutive points, including five straight by Purvis, for a 60-44 lead with 7:22 remaining.
- A quick 13-6 run by the Pirates, which included 3-pointers from White, Hughes and Sheppard, brought ECU within nine, 66-57, with 1:41 to play. ECU pulled within seven on two more 3s by Barkley and Sheppard with 12 ticks left.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After being out-rebounded by 10 in the first half, East Carolina won the battle of the boards in the second half by seven, 22-15.
- ECU's nine 3-pointers were its most in a conference game this season and most since making 10 at Virginia on Dec. 6.
- The Pirates scored 20 second chance points off 16 offensive rebounds. It's their second-most points off offensive rebounds this season. They had 23 against Florida A&M.
- Barkley led ECU in scoring for the sixth time in the last eight games and in rebounding for seventh time in eight games. It was the seventh time this season he was the Pirates' top scorer and rebounder in the same game.
- Barkley scored double digit points in the first half for the fifth time this season. His 14 points were is most before halftime this season and second-most in a half overall. He scored 17 second half points against Mercer.
- White became the sixth player in program history to score more than 1,400 career points. He has scored 1,406 points during his 116 game career. White also moved into sole possession of third-place on the school's career 3-point field goals made list with 223.
- Hughes grabbed a career-best six rebounds and matched his career-high with four assists.
- Freshman Jeremy Sheppard was the Pirates' leading scorer off the bench for the 10th time this season.

- The Pirates return home to face Tulsa Wednesday, Jan. 25, inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The Golden Hurricane will enter the contest with an 11-7 overall record, including a 5-1 mark in The American. The game will be streamed on ESPN3.
