GREENVILLE, N.C. – Led by a record-breaking performance from sophomore Stefano Migliorati, the East Carolina track and field program enjoyed a successful showing Friday and Saturday at the Doc Hale Elite Meet at Rector Fieldhouse on the campus of Virginia Tech.
Â
Migliorati posted a 1:49.81 in the 800m, surpassing Michael Quercia who ran a 1:49.99 back in 2012. Migliorati is now in sole possession of the American Athletic Conference lead in the discipline.
Â
The Pirates matched up against a number of national powers during the event, including Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, NC State and the host Hokies.
Â
"This was by far our best indoor meet of the season," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We broke school records and had life time personal records. I challenged both of our teams before this meet to step up and show some major improvements. Both teams responded to our challenge and we made some major improvements on the league performance list."
Â
Sophomore Hakeem Horton won a pair of event titles, finishing first in the 200m (21.52) and long jump (7.37m). He is now fourth in the conference in the long jump, trailing the leader by .30 meters. The men's 4x400 relay team of Jordan Martin, Horton, Zach Halliday and Tamarack Bolden recorded a time of 3:21.41 to win the event. Additionally, sophomore Nick Ciaccia ran the program's third-fastest 3,000m time, finishing in 8:25.70.
Â
On the women's side, freshman Naomi Whitaker turned in a mark of 1.64 meters for a first-place result. Senior Adell Remsberg also won the unseeded portion of the pole vault competition with a mark of 3.70 meters while classmate Sydney Teague placed second in both the mile run (5:07.47) and 3,000m (10:23.13).
Â
ECU will take one final tuneup for the AAC Indoor Championships when the Pirates head up to Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Invitational next weekend.
Â
"As I have mentioned before, the attitudes and the enthusiasm on both teams are very good," Kraft stated. "We still have a lot of work to do before our conference championships. These next 19 days leading up to the AAC Indoor Championships have to be all about focus and hard work. We are very pleased as a coaching staff with where we are at this point."
