GREENVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore distance runner Stefano Migliorati has been named the American Athletic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week after a school record-breaking performance over the weekend, according to an announcement Tuesday by the league. Â
Migliorati posted a time of 1:49.81 in the 800m at the Doc Hale Elite Meet in Blacksburg Saturday, surpassing former ECU standout Michael Quercia who ran a 1:49.99 in the discipline back in 2012. Migliorati is now in sole possession of the American Athletic Conference lead in the event.
The Pirates matched up against a number of national powers during the weekend, including Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, NC State and host Virginia Tech.
"I can't think of another person that is more deserving of this award," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "Stefano has worked extremely hard over the last two years to get to this point. He has broken two school records already this year. Not only is Stefano a great athlete, but he is equally as good in the classroom. You don't get lucky and run the times that he is running. It takes hard work and dedication. The good news is that he is only scratching the surface. He has now reset his goals and looks to do bigger and better things in the future."
ECU will tune up for the AAC Indoor Championships one final time next weekend when the Pirates head up to Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Invitational.
