Pirates Rout Charlotte in Lone Home Match of March

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina (7-8) played its first, and only, home match of March Thursday afternoon. After a seven-match road stretch, the Pirates returned home and routed Charlotte (9-8), 4-0, at the River Birch Tennis Center.

Celia Ruiz and Lisa Hofbauer paired to sweep Victoria Pahlett and Pierina Imparato, 6-0, at the top of the doubles lineup while Michelle Castro and Annija Veinsteina's 6-3 win over Alexandra Lee and Macy Vonderschmidt at No. 3 doubles claimed the point for East Carolina.Â

After falling behind 4-1 in the opening set, No. 124 Ruiz stormed back with five-consecutive wins to earn a 6-4 first set victory over Pahlett at the top of the singles lineup. She then cruised to a 6-1 win in set two giving the Purple and Gold a 2-0 match lead.Â

Maria Storozheva earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over Megan Smith at No. 6 singles to make the match 3-0 in favor of the Pirates. Castro claimed the victory for ECU with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, freezing the rest of singles play.

The Pirates head back on the road for a pair of matches at Elon and North Carolina A&T Saturday at 10 am and 4:00 pm, respectively.
