
Watkins And Yorgen Named Academic All-District

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina seniors Travis Watkins and Charlie Yorgen have been named to the College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 3 First-Team the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
Watkins, who is currently pursuing his MBA, is a two-time member of the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Boasting a 4.00 GPA, the Concord, N.C. native garnered Conference USA Commissioner's Honor accolades during his freshman and sophomore seasons and is a nine-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member. A year ago, he was named ECU Male Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year and Mr. Pirate at the Annual Goldspys. This season he was one of 11 male student-athletes to receive an Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete Award from The American.
A five-time Johnny Bench Award Watch List candidate and two-time semi-finalist, Watkins leads the Pirates with 36 RBI, while batting .323 (61-for-189) with 20 multi-hit and seven multi-RBI games. He is currently third on the club with six home runs with three coming in grand style.
Yorgen, a business management major, sports a 3.72 GPA and is a two-time American All-Academic Team selection. In 2014, his freshman year, he was a Conference USA Academic Medal Winner and Honor Roll member, and has earned ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll status seven times (Fall 2013 to present). For the month of April, he was named ECU Student Athlete-of-the-Month and during the Breakfast of Champions event was named the recipient of the Pat Draughon Postgraduate Scholarship. At the Fourth Annual Goldspys, he was named Mr. Pirate, which is presented to the male student-athlete that excels both in the classroom and in athletics, while also contributing to the community. The Chesapeake, Va. native spearheaded the baseball team's Mustache March, which has raised over $11,000 for ALS awareness the past two years.
On the season, Yorgen is batting a team second-best .355 (61-for-172) with three home runs, 30 RBI and 34 runs scored. He has drawn 22 walks while striking out just 19 times for a team-leading .446 on-base percentage, while also registering 19 multi-hit and a 10 multi-RBI games on the season – the latter leading the Pirates.
To be eligible for the Academic All-District Baseball Team, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution. No student-athlete is eligible until he has completed one full calendar year at his current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
