
Volleyball Opens Hatter Classic With Three-Set Loss To Providence

DELAND, Fla. – Providence hit .442 Friday afternoon on the way to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-18) non-conference volleyball victory over ECU in the first match of the Hatter Classic on the campus of Stetson University.

The Pirates did not fare as well in the hitting department, finishing with a .100 percentage. The Friars also held the advantage in digs (28-27) and total blocks (3.0 to 2.0).

Senior outside hitter Lael Ceriani paced the Purple and Gold with nine kills and a .467 hitting percentage while senior outside hitter Ashton Mares recorded a team-high 11 digs. Megan Onyundo and Allison Impellizeri led Providence with nine kills apiece to go along with a 14-dig performance by McKenzie Lydon.

Set One: The teams battled to a tie at 14 points apiece, but Providence ended the frame on an 11-1 run to take an early lead in the match.

Set Two: The Friars controlled the second set for the most part, building an 11-5 advantage on a kill by Addison Root. The Pirates pulled within five later in the frame, but Providence held off ECU the rest of the way to take a 2-0 edge into the third.

Set Three: The most competitive stanza of the match had the Pirates in the lead 11-9 following a Friar attacking error. However, Providence was able to pull away late – breaking a 15-15 deadlock with a 4-0 run – to seal the match in the end.
