
Gold Takes Game One Of World Series, 6-4

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Christian Smallwood drove in three runs, while Bryson Worrell tallied three hits and Tyler Smith allowed a pair of runs over four innings helping Gold take the opening game of the annual World Series, 6-4, Friday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Gold banged out 13 hits getting multiple base knocks from Worrell (three), Spencer Brickhouse (two), Connor Norby (two), Smallwood (two) and Jake Washer (two). Brickhouse, Thomas Francisco and Norby also plated runs for Gold on the afternoon.

Smith (1-0) gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts over four frames. Stephen Wilmer notched the save striking out his only batter (Brady Lloyd) in the seventh inning. Cam Colmore allowed a pair of runs (both earned) on four hits with two walks and two punch outs in his 2.1 innings on the mound.

Sam Lanier (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits with three walks in four innings. Evan Voliva (1 R, 3 Hs), Noah Jones (2 Rs, 3 Hs, 1 BB) and Ryder Giles (1 H, 2 Ks) each worked an inning of relief out of the bullpen.

Alec Burleson led the Purple club at the plate going 3-for-6 with three RBI. Lloyd drove in the other run for Purple and scored twice on the day. Lane Hoover and Bryant Packard also had base hits in the contest.

Purple jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Burleson's two-out RBI double to right center in the bottom of the first that pushed across Lloyd, who reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error.

Gold knotted the game at one-all in the top of the third frame on Norby's RBI single to center that scored Francisco.

Smallwood's two-RBI double to right-center broke the one-all tie in the fourth and put the Gold ahead for good. Worrell reached after being hit by a Lanier pitch then moved to second on Washer's base hit through the left side. Brickhouse reached on a fielder's choice moving Worrell to third before Smallwood's two-out extra base hit cleared the bases for a 3-1 advantage.

Gold added a run in the fifth on Brickhouse's sac fly and two more in the sixth on Francisco's RBI fielder's choice and Smallwood's RBI single to left.

Purple plated a run in the fifth on Burleson's RBI double down the left field line and two more in the home half of the sixth Burleson's third hit of the game and Lloyd's RBI ground out to cap the scoring at 6-4.

Game two of the World Series will be played on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. (ET). Following the contest, Pirate fans will have a chance to meet the team and get autographs during the Annual Meet The Pirates event.
