Postgame Quotes: ECU vs. High Point
November 24, 2018 | Men's Basketball
ECU HEAD COACH JOE DOOLEY
Opening Statement
"I would obviously like to congratulate Tubby on 600 wins, an unbelievable accomplishment. He's a great ambassador for the game of college basketball. He's been an unbelievable friend and mentor. Obviously I didn't want it to be against us, but it was. I thought we never really got on track. They had control of the game throughout. I thought they were more physical than us, which was disappointing. There's a lot of things we need to work on. We did cut down on a few things, obviously turnovers were better and we shot the ball better at the free throw line, but need to start getting some offensive fluidity."
On the final possession
"There were three or four different wrinkles on the play. We tried to get Shawn on one of them and we tried to get K.J. on the backside. Then when he came off the re-screen, I didn't really see what happened. I got blocked. But we weren't very alert. We've worked on it a couple times, but we didn't execute like we need to."
On HPU's offensive rebounding
"I thought the main difference in all honesty was their offensive rebounding. I thought it gave them extra possessions. We couldn't finish out. We gave up three offensive rebounds off of free throws which you should probably give up about three offensive rebounds from the free throw line in a season. It's something we've emphasized and we didn't execute. They were very physical and did a nice job of rebounding the ball."
On the Pirates' defensive effort
"We guarded well for the most part. Thirty-eight percent and lower than that at the 3-point line and giving up 55 points in your building is usually good enough to win."
On concerns about the Pirates' 3-point shooting
"I think it's a concern among many concerns, but that is one of them. I thought K.J. had a couple open looks that just didn't go in today. Percentage-wise, he's been fine. But we have trouble manufacturing points, we all know it. If you don't turn it over, then at least you can shoot it. But, as you can see, we don't have a guy that's great creating off the dribble. So we've got to try to be a little bit creative and move some people around, and we've got to figure some things out."
On using another different starting lineup
"It's a privilege to start and it's a privilege to be a Pirate. And if you're going to take it for granted, you're not going to start."

HIGH POINT HEAD COACH TUBBY SMITH
On winning his 600th career game
"They made a great run at us, so this was a good win for us. I know coach Dooley as a great friend and they are playing better and playing well, but we just played a little bit better today... I'm grateful to have a chance to get my 600th win, and it be at my alma mater."
Â
Â
GUARD SHAWN WILLIAMS
On the final possession
"In that timeout before, we had a play designed, so we were supposed to go down and execute that. Things got a little rattled, out of control. I made a decent move, and I feel like I could've gotten to the free throw line, but I ended up passing it up and things didn't go as planned."
Â
Â
FORWARD JAYDEN GARDNER
On not being able to take the lead
"It was really frustrating. We got it from three to one and then from three to one, and we just couldn't take the lead."
On playing against an opponent who doesn't play fast
"They like to slow down the tempo, so I feel like that started to affect us. We fought back, we sped them up a little bit, turned them over got some stops, and we just couldn't execute down the stretch."
