– For the second time in four weeks, ECU's Jayden Gardner
has been named the American Athletic Conference Freshman-of-the-Week, the league announced Monday. He was previously recognized with the weekly distinction on Nov. 12 after his opening week performances against Delaware State, James Madison and Lamar.
Gardner, a 6-6 forward from Wake Forest, N.C., posted three 20-point performances in a trio of games last week including two double-doubles to help the Pirates earn a pair of victories. He matched his career-high of 30 points at UNCW Tuesday before dropping 22 in wins over Appalachian State on Friday and Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday.
It was the second time this season that Gardner netted 30 points in a game to become the first freshman in school history to have multiple 30-point games in a season.
He recorded his third and fourth double-double of the season versus UNCW and App State, grabbing 15 rebounds against the Seahawks and 11 versus the Mountaineers.
Gardner set the ECU and American Athletic Conference freshman single-game record for most free throws made (16) and the conference's overall record for most free throws attempted (19) against App State. He leads the nation in total free throws made (72) and attempted (90).
He averaged 24.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 32.0 minutes per game while shooting 53.5 percent from the floor (23-of-43) and 82.4 percent at the free throw line (28-of-34).
ECU returns to action following the exam break on Dec. 18 against Charlotte. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Halton Arena on the UNCC campus.
