
ECU Women Jump Into Team Lead At AAC Outdoor Championships

CINCINNATI, Ohio  – Anchored by another individual event title Saturday, the ECU women have taken the lead at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships after day two of three at Gettler Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati.

With one day to go, the Pirate women have surged in front having accumulated 45 points to lead the meet over current second place Connecticut who has picked up 34 points. The ECU men are in seventh place with 17 points.

Senior Galissia Cause captured the women's discus league championship with a mark of 52.20 meters. It is the second-straight year a Pirate has won the event as Mohogany Baker entered the meet as the reigning champion. Freshman Tavia Ranger also scored in the discus with a sixth-place finish and mark of 48.57 meters.

In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Grace Sullivan claimed the silver medal with a time of 10:28.53 – less than two seconds off the pace of gold medal winner Ashley Barnes of Tulsa. Freshman Sommer Knight found the podium in the women's pole vault, finishing in third place with a mark of 3.81 meters to earn all-conference honors, while fellow rookie Mackenzie Whitaker placed second in the long jump with a mark of 6.07 meters.
