Volleyball Announces Schedule For Highly-Anticipated 2018 Season

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU volleyball team will play 13 matches at home in 2018, according to the release of its fall schedule by school officials Monday. The Pirates went 22-11 last year, marking their first 20-win season since 2005 and first winning campaign since 2006.

"I am especially excited about this upcoming season after coming off such a great year," sixth-year head coach Julie Torbett said. "We lost some incredible seniors so it will be interesting to see how the younger players step up and lead. The schedule is very balanced, providing us with some challenges early on against Florida A&M, Southern Miss, Charlotte and Lehigh. We also face some programs we have historically been successful against to allow us a chance to try out the new players and establish a solid lineup heading into conference play."

ECU will play its first seven matches on the road before opening their home campaign Sept. 6-7 with the Pirate Invitational.

"We are home for five football weekends this year," Torbett added. "That should be really exciting to encourage Pirate Nation to incorporate volleyball into their football weekend in Greenville."

The campaign kicks off Aug. 24-25 when the Purple and Gold heads to Mississippi for the Southern Miss Invitational to face off against Florida A&M, Alcorn State and the host Golden Eagles. ECU will then make the trek to Tennessee Tech for the Golden Eagle Invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 1, taking on Hampton, USC Upstate and TTU.

A non-conference tilt at N.C. Central Sept. 2 precedes the Pirates' home opener scheduled for Sept. 6 against Gardner-Webb. That match is part of the two-day Pirate Invitational that also features Eastern Washington and Charlotte. ECU travels to Williamsburg, Va. Sept. 14-15 to close out the bulk of its non-conference slate, battling Morgan State, Lehigh and host William & Mary in the 2nd Colonial Classic.

The Pirates begin American Athletic Conference play Sept. 21 with a match against league travel partner Cincinnati before completing the home-and-home series with N.C. Central Sept. 25 in Greenville. ECU produced a 13-7 AAC record in 2017, finishing in fourth place.

Along with a return trip to Cincinnati Nov. 21 to end the season, the Pirates will take on Wichita State, Tulsa, UCF, USF, Tulane and Memphis twice in conference play while hosting Houston and SMU and traveling to Connecticut and Temple in single matches.

The American Conference regular season champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Championship.
