Galissia Cause Wins Shot Put Gold Medal At FISU America Games

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Pirate All-America performer Galissia Cause added another highlight to her decorated track and field career Sunday, winning the shot put gold medal at the inaugural FISU America Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Facing off against competitors from Argentina, Brazil and Chile, as well as a fellow American, Cause put up a mark of 16.43 meters to run away with the title. Kayla Melgar (USA) took second place with a mark of 15.23 meters.

Cause, a four-time NCAA regional qualifier, advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time in June where she captured 10th place in the discus and earned Second-Team All-America honors – the first such recognition for the program since Avion Jones garnered first-team accolades in 2016. Cause won the discus conference title at the 2018 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships and is the Pirate school record holder of both the indoor and outdoor shot put events.

The FISU America Games are a multi-sport event sanctioned by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Alternating with the Summer and Winter Universiades, which invite all the countries of the world for the biennial events, the FISU America Games are a regional multi-sport event similar to the Pan-American Games for FISU member-countries of North and South America held in even-numbered years.
