Keeping Hearts & Minds In The Right Place
August 05, 2018 | Football
GREENVILLE, N.C. – It was not a church in the traditional sense of the word, but there was some gospel and praise music playing over the loudspeakers at the Cliff Moore Practice Facility on Sunday morning as the third workout of the fall camp got underway for the ECU Pirates.
Â
Chuck Young of SPORTworks Ministry also was at practice with the Pirates, as he has been most of the last 21 years.
Â
"They all know it's Sunday out here, and the guys were enjoying the music part of it," Young said. "We can worship out here as much as we can worship somewhere else as long as our hearts and minds are in the right place."
Â
Young also works with the baseball, men's and women's track and field, and women's lacrosse teams. On scheduled days each week, he has one of the teams over to his house for dinner and Bible study.
Â
During the regular season with the football team, it's usually Wednesdays or Thursdays, depending on the schedule. Typically, Young said about 50 to 60 players will show up.
Â
"They eat food we cook and we study God's word together," he said.Â
Â
During camp, though, the schedule is different. It's an extremely busy time for the coaches and the players. In the past they have taken team trips to church, but it's hard to book a time.
Â
"Camp has always been hard to fit in what we normally do," Young said. "They're installing a lot with a lot of guys and a lot of moving parts."
Â
Young keeps daily contact with the players in all the sports he deals with by sending them a daily devotion.
Â
"I do that so we can steer them in the right way and present what the Bible has to say about life and how it relates to them on the field and how they relate to one another and the community and everything else," he said. "God's been good. I told God I'd never do full-time ministry, and I've just finished my 33rd year of doing that. It is a joy to be around these guys."
Â
On the field, the Pirates continued building on a strong offseason and first two days of fall camp, despite it being quite a bit hotter than it was Friday or Saturday. Temperatures soared to around 90 by the time practice ended around 11:30, and when the clouds weren't blocking the sun, it got to be unpleasant.
Â
"Double H, hot and humid," ECU Head Coach Scottie Montgomery said. "There is no question about it, our guys battled all the way through it. The coaches did a good job. I'm glad we have our morning practice schedule set up right now because going this afternoon would've been a tough one. We have to come out here this evening and get some more work (in a walk-through). I am very, very pleased with the intensity from our defense and the toughness of some of our skill guys on offense."
