Postgame Quotes: Temple
January 16, 2019 | Men's Basketball
ECU Head Coach Joe Dooley
Opening statement
"Very disappointed in the start. I don't think we have played like that in a while, obviously, a lot of that is attributed to Temple. We just didn't seem in sync from the get-go, getting down 24-4 doesn't help. We did dig ourselves out of a hole which was good to see, we did fight back. Too many breakdowns on things we haven't done in a long time so that was very disappointing. Disappointed in the way we played in front of our crowd, I thought we had a great crowd, apologetic for the performance we put on. Can't do that against a good team and they are a very good team."
On the Pirates' three-point defense
"Everything was a breakdown. We did things tonight that we haven't done in a while even in practice. You got talented players, (Shizz) Alston is a very good player and he can make shots off the bounce. Once you see the ball go through the basket it becomes contagious, just like us we had a lot of open shots that we didn't make and that might become a pattern too."
On heading to Houston next week
"You've got to be turned up everywhere. We are not good enough talent-wise to line up and play and trying to explain that is not as simple as you think. We have to be turned up full throttle to even be able to compete. If we are not, we are going to get beat. Even if we are turned up full throttle, we might get beat. But if you don't give yourself the best chance to be turned up we are not going to win. Effort should be constant, it shouldn't be something you are congratulated for or praised for, you should always try hard and we have to figure that out. If we aren't smart enough to figure out what happened last year in the first half there (losing 62-13 at halftime) then we aren't very alert, and they should be on very high alert on what happened in the first half at Houston last season."
On figuring out how to get off to better starts
"I'm befuddled by that. I think part of that is on the coaches, a lot of it is being ready to play and preparing in which the guys for the most part of done a good job, but we'll reevaluate what we're doing."
Sophomore K.J. Davis
On what does it take mentally to see a comeback in the first half
"Just waking up you know, we didn't come out to play. We didn't come out to play at all today. It took us to really come together, rally our guys up, and went to halftime in the locker room, we tried to go over everything that went wrong. We went out in the second half, and came out pretty hard."
On what did you see in this Temple team that you guys wanted to emulate
"I think their poise, they got a lot older guys and guards. I have no doubt that we'll get there. I see us growing but you know, we just have to mature a little a bit. I think that's what they have that we don't."
Freshman Jayden Gardner
On the first half and slow start
"I played awful. I got to play better than that. I have to understand when to take the right shots and when to trust my teammates. I settled down in the second half, my teammates started finding me the ball and I started hitting shots and made key free throws down the stretch. We just all have to play together and play good and get back on defense. It was just a bad loss today."
On Dooley's message at halftime
"He really didn't say anything. He said, 'You guys figure it out!' We talked and came together as a unit and made a decision. Do we want to play, or do we just want to get rolled over? We decided to fight and you saw the run that we made."
